Memory card pro duo, a form factor of Memory Stick is actually a removable flash memory card format, which was launched by Sony in October of 1998. Memory Stick is also used generally to describe the whole family of Memory Sticks. In addition to the original Memory Stick, the family includes the Memory Stick PRO, a revision which allows maximum storage capacity as well as faster files transfer speeds; Memory Stick Duo, a small-form-factor version of the Memory Stick including the PRO Duo; and the smaller Memory Stick Micro (M2).
In December 2006, Sony added the Memory Stick PRO-HG, a high speed variant of the PRO to be used in high definition still cameras as well as high definition video cameras. Memory Sticks include a wide range of actual formats, which in turn include three different form factors. The Memory Stick PRO Duo very quickly replaced the Memory Stick Duo due to its size limitation of 128 MB as well as slow transfer speed. Memory Stick PRO Duo is available in all the same variants as the larger Memory Stick PRO, with and without High Speed mode, as well as with and without Magic Gate support.
In March 2008, Sony further released a 16 GB version of the Memory card PRO Duo. Sony has additional plans to release a 32 GB version of the memory card, which can have the maximum theoretical of 2TB, in the later half of 2009.
